Recycling & Trash
Curbside Recycling
Starting January 2023, South Orange's curbside recycling follows a dual-stream system. Recyclables are divided into two categories for separate pickups on alternating weeks: "Fibers" (cardboard, paper, newspaper) one week, and "Commingled" (plastic, glass, metal containers) the next.
For recycling guidelines, schedules, FAQs, and more, visit South Orange Public Works.
Recycling at the Public Works Recycling Center
You can recycle more items at the recycling center than in curbside recycling. In addition to Fibers and Commingled items, we can accept Metals, Freon Containing Appliances, Yard Debris, Used Clothing, Used Motor Oil, and some Film Plastics. See this list of acceptable Recycling Center materials for details.
Trash Collection
The Village of South Orange does not provide curbside trash pickup to residents. Trash pickup must be contracted for with a private vendor.
